Stools are quite variable among breastfed infants.  Some will have a loose stool with each feeding (normal), others will go several days without a stool (also normal).  Formula fed infants usually have a stool every day or every second day.  For treatment of diarrhea (large loose stools between feedings) see the section on Diarrhea.

For constipation (hard stools sometimes in little balls), 1 tsp. of Karo Syrup (dark) may be added to formula or water.  The use of increased fruits (especially apricots, pears, and prunes) is helpful.  For stubborn cases, the occasional use of an infant glycerin suppository (available without prescription) is indicated.  In constipated children over 1 year, please schedule an appointment with your doctor.
